Take stock of where you are
- What responsibilities have you held, and which did you find most meaningful?
- Which skills do people consistently rely on you for?
- What conditions help you do your best work: pace, autonomy, collaboration, structure?
Define what ‘next’ could look like
Rather than fixing on a single job title, describe the kind of work, environment and growth you are looking for. This opens up more paths and helps you recognise a good fit.
Identify the gap
Compare where you are with where you want to go. The gap may involve skills, qualifications, experience in a particular setting, or simply visibility.
Set immediate, achievable actions
- Complete a course or certification related to your direction.
- Take on a project that stretches a specific skill.
- Have conversations with people already working in the area you are exploring.
- Update your resume and online profile to reflect your intended direction.
Review and adjust regularly
Revisit your plan every few months. Circumstances change, and so do your interests. A plan that evolves with you is far more useful than one that stays fixed.
Direction gives your effort meaning. Even a simple plan helps you recognise the opportunities worth pursuing.
